The database is currently restricted to larger magnitude eruptions because they have large hazard footprints that can threaten large populations.
Our data show that the number of fatalities is related to hazard extent (Figures 16a and b), and highly destructive hazards with typically large hazard footprints, such as PDCs, lahars, and tsunamis, have caused the greatest numbers of fatalities.
