Cartilage is made up of two main extracellular matrix macromolecules: type II collagen and aggrecan, a large aggregating proteoglycan.
Being the second most abundant cartilage matrix protein, aggrecan is a large "aggregating" proteoglycan consisting of a core protein and numerous highly sulfated glycosaminoglycan chains that are covalently attached [ 91].
The extra cellular matrix (ECM) in the main body of the tendon consists primarily of type I collagen, while the predominant proteoglycan component is the small leucine-rich proteoglycan decorin, and the principal large aggregating proteoglycan is versican.
