BLACK HOLE BITES GOD: The theoretical physicist David Deutsch, whose hard-to-classify book "The Beginning of Infinity" enters the nonfiction list at No. 15, also has some things to say about God, not to mention dark matter, parallel universes, good art, bad philosophy, global warming, the evolution of language and just about everything else.
"The language they are using about everything has been Cultural Revolution hyperbole," said Susan Shirk, a former assistant secretary of state for East Asian affairs and author of "China: Fragile Superpower".
"I had been arguing that social learning isn't just about language, it's about just about everything we do," Kuhl said.
Setting aside the question of the harmonic language, everything about this piece is new: its form, its look, its feel.
So the World Oral Literature Project aims to document vanishing languages – and everything about the culture and society they convey – before they disappear.
They completely disagree about everything they're discussing, and yet they have a shared language that enables them to discuss it with concision and force.
"The performance is all about EVERYTHING the performer gives…in voice, in sound, in body, in language, in facial expression, in intimate eye contact," he said.
But jazz is Mr. Mehldau's language, and nearly everything about "Highway Rider" — not least Mr. Mehldau's rhapsodic piano solos, Joshua Redman's magnificently supple virtuosic saxophone playing, Larry Grenadier's shapely bass lines and Jeff Ballard's and Matt Chamberlain's inventive, richly detailed drumming — is couched in jazz's bluesy chromaticism and fluid rhythms.
