The general class of problem is known as a combinatorial optimisation problem, and is widely visualised in terms of a 'landscape', in which the 'position' in the landscape represents a candidate solution while the height represents a measure of the quality of the candidate solution at that point in the 'search space' or landscape of possible solutions.
