Ciocca, Peterson and Cerneka created a pilot project together in Guatemalan landfill communities for spring break 2011.
Funded by the Landfill communities fund and Cardiff's twinned Scandinavian Hordaland County Council, the new building provides improved access, a new cafe Norsk, gallery and terrace made from Norwegian timber.
The goals were modest: the project sought to create a curriculum for the team that explored the challenges of landfill communities in Guatemala.
This was carried out by the Dorset Wildlife Trust, along with partners, over three years, but had cost an astonishing sum – £850,000 – which had been paid for by tax credits from the Landfill Communities Fund.
Today, instead of expensively tearing out the giant satellite dishes and banishing them to a landfill, a community mural project has turned the old technology into an outdoor masterpiece and public park.

Our overall mission is to reduce avoidable food waste and carbon emissions by preventing surplus food from going to landfill, through a community-led infrastructure to divert and transform this food into delicious and nutritious meals.
The report states, "We instituted the first comprehensive in-flight recycling program in the industry in June 2007.... ..our in-flight recycling program has diverted 4.1 million pounds (2,053 tons) of aluminum, plastic and paper products from community landfills between June 2007 and June 2009".... "We currently collect passenger recyclables on domestic flights into 25 cities".
