Tests were conducted on manufactured waste samples prepared using US waste constituent components; fresh wastes obtained prior and subsequent to compaction at an MSW landfill; and wastes obtained from various depths at the same landfill.
(2) The landfill will collect MSW at the same level as mentioned for 30 years at the end of which it will be shut down; after the shutdown, the landfill will no longer accept any MSW.
The methane in landfill is the same as 'clean fuel' natural gas.
The rush to build the new plants is rooted in the idea that they can be a cheaper alternative to sending rubbish to landfill, while creating renewable energy at the same time.
"I have no objection where it goes," says Paul Renyard, director of corporate services at Plymouth Theatre Royal, "as long as it's not into landfill". The same philosophy is creeping into every aspect of the business.
But at the same time, landfills for solid wastes have started reaching their capacity.
A question arose: Why not dump in the bay and at the same time create landfill for future development?
"At the same time, one landfill was closed by the pollution control board for being environmentally hazardous, and another was shut down because local farmers protested.
"They're going down the road leading to the landfill; they take the same route every day.
At the same time closed landfills and their post-closure management pose environmental, economic and land value concerns at the local authorities.
