GHG's come from several sources, including electricity generators, transportation, industrial, residential and commercial, agricultural and land use sources.
Many factors such as climate, soil type, mineralogy of the rock types forming catchments and aquifers, area topography, overlying land uses, source of recharge water, atmospheric inputs, etc., may affect groundwater chemistry (Reghunath et al. 2002; Singh et al. 2004; Tziritis et al., 2016).

Successful source discrimination in agricultural environments depends on the key assumption that land-use source signatures imprinted on catchment soils are decipherable from those due to other landscape factors affecting soil and sediment properties.

These sites included both traffic and background locations, and represented the gradient of various land use, emission sources, and traffic characteristics.
Using this procedure, we found several covariates to be important predictors in the post-1999 model, including distance to nearest A1 and A2 roads, urban land use, point-source PM2.5 emissions within 10 km, elevation, wind speed, and precipitation.
Furthermore, when we included AOD as a predictor of monthly PM2.5 in a statistical prediction model, AOD provided little additional information in a model that already accounts for land use, emission sources, meteorology, and regional variability.
Land use, point sources and population density were the main factors, but additional elements were included by several regions, such as the change of the natural regime, artificial modifications of the shoreline, introduction of fish and fish-farming activities, mass recreation, and invasive species.
Hence, there must be other reasons, such as pollution with, e.g., hydrophobic contaminants by diffuse sources (e.g., roads, traffic, and agricultural land use) or point sources upstream of the reference site.
