The Health and Human Services Department says insurers cannot deny lactation services simply because they lack trained providers in-network; they are obligated to cover one out of network.
"It's abysmal, the state of lactation services being provided by insurance companies currently," said Susanne Madden, a founder of the National Breastfeeding Center, which last month published an unsettling assessment of the breast-feeding policies of insurers nationwide.
Eighty per cent of hospitals in the United States and the United Kingdom stock Medela's pumps, and its sales increased thirty-four per cent in the two years after the passage of the Affordable Care Act, which mandated coverage of lactation services, including pumps.
Insurance companies vary widely as to what kinds of lactation services they will pay for, if any.
"From a research perspective, it's important we measure how the milk is reaching the baby, because there may be differences," said Alison Stuebe, a maternal-fetal medicine physician and the medical director of lactation services at University of North Carolina Health Care.

Waiting times, particular for lactation services, was the main limitation identified.
"[Fewer] traumatic injury deaths was very interesting to me," says Nancy Wight, a neonatologist and medical director of lactation services at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Children's Hospital in San Diego.
