Tuition dollars from one should not be used to bankroll the expensive labs, internships, field experiences, and clinical training of the other.
To do so, the authors performed qualitative and quantitative analyses to assess the programme accurately (annual staff numbers, annual excavations, exhumations and identifications, applied field and lab methods, internship and training programmes).
Using linguistic analysis, the authors found that students in the CURE reported a stronger sense of ownership of their research projects compared with students who participated in traditional lab courses and research internships (Hanauer et al., 2012; Hanauer and Dolan, in press, 2014); these students also reported higher levels of persistence in science or medicine (Hanauer et al., 2012).
There are a few places out there that offer paid internships in labs, but getting a placement is tough.

In lectures, laboratory exercises and internships in private pharmacies and public hospitals, they learn skills suited to jobs ranging from running a biology lab to analysing medicinal plants or monitoring water quality.
Students who participate in CUREs report many of the same gains as students who participate in more intensive but less scalable lab- or field-based internships (Goodner et al., 2003; Hatfull et al., 2006; Drew and Triplett, 2008; Lopatto et al., 2008; Caruso et al., 2009; Shaffer et al., 2010).
Institutions should offer career development courses in all areas of the National Postdoctoral Association core competencies (The National Postdoctoral Association Core Competencies Committee, n.d).. Trainees should be encouraged to undertake internships outside the lab to gain experience in other career options.
