"knows of" is a correct and usable phrase in written English.
It is often used to describe someone's awareness or familiarity with something or someone. Example: "I have never met John, but I know of him through mutual friends." In this sentence, the speaker is saying that they are aware of John's existence and possibly some information about him, but they have not personally met him.
