The optimization of microreactor designs for applications in chemical process engineering usually requires knowledge of the residence time distribution (RTD).
The knowledge of the residence time would also help to illuminate processes that control subsurface flow routing since it is directly related to the diversity of flow pathways in a catchment (Pearce et al. 1986; OWENS 1991; Kirchner et al. 2001).
