"knowing him as" is a correct and usable phrase in written English
It is usually used as a subordinate clause to provide additional information about a subject. Here is an example: "Knowing him as a kind and compassionate person, I was not surprised when he volunteered at the local homeless shelter." In this sentence, "knowing him as a kind and compassionate person" adds information about the subject (him) and provides a context for the following clause.
