Present in up to 38%% of knees imaged by MR, they consist of an enlarged gastrocnemius-semimembranosus bursa, which in more than 50%% of the general population normally communicates with the joint space through a synovial protrusion that follows the path of least resistance in the posteromedial aspect of the joint capsule [1].
14 knees (image-based: 5; image-free: 4; conventional: 5) had a preoperative varus and 11 knees (image-based: 4; image-free: 3; conventional: 4) had a preoperative valgus alignment of more then 10° (Table 3). 1 knee in the image-based group had to be reoperated because of an infection.

The knee images were then digitised for processing by a computer using the algorithm.
Algorithms are used by computers to analyse knee images in order to compare and contrast tiny structures in the joint that might indicate diseases like osteoarthritis.
The proposed NPCA-NLM filter was tested using 256 × 256, 8-bits/pixel MR images, i.e., the brain, body, and knee images shown in Figure 4.
The NPCA-NLM filter showed better performance than the NLM filter and PCA-NLM filter for body and knee images, which were corrupted with σ = 10 and 40.
The numbers of significant components for PCA as shown in Figure 2 were computed as about 10, 14, and 16 for brain, body, and knee images, respectively; however, the numbers of significant components for NPCA were all computed as about 15.
