Granting a stay of a lower court's decision is usually a strong indication of the justices' interest in eventually hearing the case.
But the justices' interest was quite clearly elsewhere, in part because in the years since the case began in 1986, abortion clinics have acquired a new protective legal tool in a 1994 federal law, the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, making this case prospectively less relevant to abortion providers and protesters.
