In a study of childhood maltreatment prevalence across public service sectors, 77.6% of youth from the juvenile justice sample (n = 229) had reported being maltreated, with 57.3% having experienced multiple forms of maltreatment (Miller, Green, Fettes, & Aarons, 2011).
In a more recent study on youth who simultaneously received services from the child welfare and juvenile justice agencies (n = 1,148), the rate of recidivism more than 5 years for these maltreated and nonmaltreated offenders was 56%and41%1%, respectively (Huang, Ryan, & Herz, 2012).
Previous outpatient treatment and any treatment did not show a significant relationship with the number of previous imprisonments.> Twenty-nine participants had at least two previous psychiatric inpatient treatments and had been admitted at least for the second time to the penal justice system (n = 29; 19% of the total sample; 95% CI: 13 27).
