Half-a-dozen musicians from the collective, headed by Reeps One and Afrikan Boy, with Krar Collective, and Tamar Osborn on sax, jammed with members of the Hebden Bridge Junior Brass Band in a packed room.
I, on the other hand, head to Hebdon Bridge Trades Club with Afrikan Boy, Krar Collective and Reeps One where they're putting on a bizarre sounding 20 minute show in collaboration with the Hebdon Bridge Junior Brass Band.
The Junior Brass Band are no strangers to unusual gigs, performing annually at the Mytholmroyd Dock Pudding contest and also dressing in Victorian costume for carol concerts in the local beauty spot of Hardcastle Crags, but this was the first time they have been called upon to give a black power style salute.
Over the past week, a bunch of 80 African and western musicians have been touring Britain by chartered train, performing nightly shows while spending every spare waking second visiting schools, hospitals and bandstands to play impromptu pop-up gigs (one involved beatboxer, an Ethiopian group with a six-stringed lyre, and the Hebden Bridge Junior Brass Band).
By the way, they'll be playing in a public place (read: the field where the junior high band practices) and tons of locals have been bribed to come and act excited as if this were an Olympic trial.
Maybe I will be there at, say, junior high band practice with her, my arms out making a big C around her, a giant second ribcage that will keep a-holes from elbowing her while she tries to master the vibraslap.
LAST summer it was all about Silly Bandz, those brightly colored rubber bands in odd shapes that the junior set wore stacked as bracelets.
