Citation potential is shown to vary not only between journal subject categories – groupings of journals sharing a research field – or disciplines (e.g., journals in mathematics, engineering and social sciences tend to have lower values than titles in life sciences), but also between journals within the same subject category.
To map each journal to its closely related research fields, we use Journal Subject Terms.
These are the two most complete, prominent and widely applied journal subject classifications available.
The Journal Subject Terms are assigned by NLM to MEDLINE journals to describe the journals' overall scope, and the Recent engine utilizes them to calculate users' research interests, giving more weight to literature within the same scope when making recommendations.
The data are in an XML format and are indexed by the system along with the metadata of PubMed IDs, titles, authors, index dates, and journal types (Journal Subject Terms).
Next, they were asked to compare two different sorting strategies on the journal list indexed by Journal Subject Terms.
Our results demonstrate that the distribution of citations differs between types of article and journals within journal subject areas.
