Although the 1-RM test is the most reliable test for evaluating the maximal dynamic strength of a muscle or group of muscles, because of the very low fitness profile of patients enrolled in this study, a 5 8 maximal repetition test was preferred, for safety (to avoid maximal loads to the joint structures) and validity (untrained subjects are not always able to properly reach their 1-RM) reasons.
