We selected from the discharge SDO database the records meeting the following criteria: i) admission in the period from October 2003 to October 2009; ii) admission with discharge on a different day; iii) age ≥16 years; iv) admissions not resulting in transfer to another acute hospital; v) admitted to the wards/units of the nine specialties reporting at least 130 deaths per year.
Diabetes outcomes directly related to patient management (i) Insulin delivery/number of injections/insulin types, (ii) number of self-monitored blood glucose values, (iii) hypoglycaemic episodes (frequency and severity), (iv) admissions to hospital and reasons for admissions (e.g. episodes of ketoacidosis, hypoglycaemia).
The patients enrolled met the following inclusion criteria: (i) hospitalisation for HFMD; (ii) five years old or younger; (iii) residence in the local city at least six months before the disease onset; (iv) admission within four days of the onset of illness; and (v) informed consent to participate in this study from parents or guardians.
**Multivariable analysis was adjusted for baseline variables (age, sex, Charlson comorbidity index, acute physiology and chronic health evaluation IV score, admission type, and sepsis on admission).
According to the APACHE IV ICU admission diagnoses, 56.2% of ICU admissions were surgical.
These covariables included age, sex, history of dementia, history of alcohol misuse, Charlson comorbidity index, acute physiology and chronic health evaluation IV score, admission type, readmission status, and presence of sepsis on admission to the intensive care unit.

We classified an admission as attributable to the very elderly if the patient was aged at least 80 years on admission to the ICU and as being related to cardiac surgery if the APACHE II or IV reason for admission was related to planned or emergency cardiac surgery, as detailed in Additional file 1 [ 32].
