Outside its natural range it is an important commercial timber species in France, Germany and New Zealand (Maclaren 2009).
It grows both within its natural range (South Asia) as well as in Sub Saharan Africa, Central and Southern America, the Caribbean, Philippines, and the Middle East.
In countries where it has been introduced, it has been restricted to those exotic trees with which it would associate in its natural range.
