Within its range, it co-occurs with the common blacktip shark; the ratio between C. limbatus and C. tilstoni was once thought to be 1 300, but recent genetic studies have found it to be closer to 50 50.
The resulting acoustic pattern is A- SILENCE-B silence-C SILENCE-A … A can modify its conspicuousness by shortening its 'domain of silence', i.e. timing its signal so it co-occurs, on average, with others' calls.
For most of its range it is the only subspecies, but near its southern limit it co-occurs with B. integrifolia subsp. integrifolia.
But the issue has been controversial for other crops, particularly maize in Mexico where it co-occurs with its wild relatives, various taxa known as "teosintes" (Serratos et al. 1997).
