This chapter presents a study of graph substructures and corresponding error patterns involved in decoding failures on various channels under different iterative message passing and linear programming decoding algorithms.
They also revolutionized the coding theory by establishing a new soft-iterative paradigm, where long powerful codes are constructed from short simple codes and decoded through iterative message exchange and successive refinement between component decoders.
Belief propagation is an iterative message passing algorithm on general graphs and has been widely used to solve many graph inference problem [3], such as social network analysis [1], fraud detection [4], and computer vision [5].
For long length LDPC codes (e.g., DVB-S2 codes), typically more than 70% of the circuit's area in VLSI decoders is occupied by memory units [6, 15], which are essential to support the iterative message-passing mechanism.
