"The lifetime of an app is very short, so we wanted to do a business that would last longer," says Lee. "Then we looked at 3D printing and we thought, what is a good item to be printed?
Items can be printed on-demand and delivered to you within days.
"No doubt once there is good connectivity and skills the possibility of 3D printing will become apparent, especially due to the lack of access to suppliers for spare parts and items that can be printed on-site".
The system uses the print bed to both hold printed objects and to rotate items to be scanned.
"I think we will see much faster delivery of items, including bespoke items, as they will be printed locally," Mann says.
Additionally, to increase the ease of interpretation of the results, all items above the threshold will be printed in a bold font, and those items that are not above the threshold will be printed in light-grey.
The proposal specifies that calorie counts be printed next to menu items in type that is as large "as the name or price of the item".
A pictogram can be printed out to show how each item in the kit should be used, in picture form.
Any items that have a photo should be printed in colour, if possible.
It is likely impossible that the government will be able to successfully prevent every illicit item from being printed, chiefly because a 3D printer would not have to be connected to the internet to print from a local computer.
