We found that in 55 of the 122 cases of mis-assignment (six of 15 for forest and 49 of 107 for savanna elephants), there would have been no overlap in mtDNA haplotypes between the locality that was the actual source of the elephant sample and the locality to which it was wrongly assigned using microsatellites (Fig. 5).
