If we closely scrutinize Fig. 4, however, we note that the patterns of two post-1986 school cohorts did not fit the expected pattern for the expected age by birth month, shown in Fig. 1, as the observed age gap between August-born children and September-born children is not as large as the 1-year difference.
Overall, the acoel Hox sequences fit the expected pattern predicted in a previous study that analysed Hox gene structure [ 55].
Later the Japanese research group confirmed and extended such observations [ 20, 38], and identified variation in species that they had initially reported to fit the expected pattern.
