SCOTT -- Another one I thought was terrible, although it was quite popular, was "Love, Actually," with its veneer of class and good taste -- and everyone's British and it's nicely shot.
It overstays its welcome a little, and the tension dips towards the deliberately perfunctory end, but it's nicely tailored both to the orchestra's prowess and its distinctive, glamorous sound, all plush strings, virile-sounding brass and mellow woodwind.
It's nicely recorded, too: some of Netrebko's discs capture the power of her voice at the expense of its opulence; here, you get a real sense of its force and beauty.
As for the outright strangeness of wunderkind Alton, it's nicely offset by the casting of Lieberher, a child actor who's impressive but essentially down to earth in his manner.
