In the other was Liao Yiwu, the winner of this year's Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, which he accepted Sunday in Frankfurt with a scorching speech whose theme was: "This empire must break apart".
Wen, the translator, said the officer told Liao, "It's a hard-earned opportunity, hope you can cherish it," and encouraged him to talk about China's social progress to his foreign audiences.
"There have been three decades of this, now it's suddenly coming to a halt," Liao added.
"It looks like I'm sending a signal to him to take the photo," says Liao. "I think it's like a metaphor for our relationship.
It is good, because Liao is now safe and feels liberated: "My goal was personal freedom and freedom to write," he told me over the phone from Berlin, with his German translator, Yeemei Guo, as our interpreter.
"It's not real, but your brain says it's real," Mr. Liao said.
The area was redefined in 1907 and named Fengtian; in 1929 the boundaries were altered and it was renamed Liaoning (roughly, "Liao Peace").
Although MjNCX displays Na+/Ca2+ exchange activity, phylogenetically it is a YRBG member (Liao et al. 2012; Gaash et al. 2013), and related to MmYRBG1 (Fig. 1).
It was the 13th time Mr. Liao had been prevented from leaving the country.
But it was in jail that Mr. Liao met many of the characters who would fill "The Corpse Walker".
