"If there was no other reason to run — other than the civil liberties, civil rights issue of ballot access — it'd be worth it," Mr. Nader said in a telephone interview after announcing his candidacy on "Meet the Press".
Redistribution is based on past turnout, new registrations, any recent purges under the National Voter Registration Act, and the number of ballot issues in the district.
A few warned that the membership would be swamped by entryism from "union militants", but never let them say they told you so: the number of ballot papers being issued to affiliated supporters from the unions is less than a quarter of the total, and significantly fewer than in the last contest.
According to Detroit's election director, Daniel Baxter, dozens of voting machines broke in Wayne County as the number of votes cast did not match the number of ballots issued in a third of the county's voting precincts.
Preliminary investigation by election officials in Wayne County found that 610 of the area's 1,680 precincts could not reconcile the number of votes cast according to the machines with the number of ballots issued according to the electoral rolls.
And also, the number of ballots at issue here are between 650,000 in Palm Beach County and also 900,000, up to 900,000, in Broward County.
However, because of early voting, by the time your issue reached California a large number of ballots had already been cast.
State law rejects a recount in places where the two figures don't match up: a precinct is ineligible to be recounted if the "number of ballots to be recounted and the number of ballots issued on election day as shown on the poll list or the computer printout do not match and the difference is not explained to the satisfaction of the board of canvassers," the law says.
"I think the robo-calls solely on the issue of a ballot measure falls within the canon that permits speaking and other activities on the law, the legal system and the administration of justice," Mr. Gillers said.
The defining issue of that ballot was the emissions trading scheme legislation in the senate, where denialist Liberal party senators sabotaged Turnbull's negotiations with Rudd and climate-change minister Penny Wong.
