Consistent with the protein-coding genes, these substitutions consist mainly of A to G (36%), C to U (43%) and U to C (14%) substitutions, with one case of C to G. Given that dinoflagellate mitochondrial genes occur in multiple copies, recovery of further, independently isolated copies of these genes will be required to substantiate these inferences of rRNA editing.
Taylor et al. [ 10] isolated copies of the NP-like gene from specimens of the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus), the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus) and the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii), but each of these NIRVs appeared to be pseudogenized.
But are these genes unique to the fly, or do homologous genes determine the development of a human embryo?The answer to that question has had to wait for the invention of recombinant DNA technology which has made it possible to isolate, copy and amplify genes from a fly and to re-introduce them into a mouse, or vice versa.
"In order to see if this finding was real, we wanted to isolate copies of the genes ourselves," Taylor says.
Eight 'high copy' isolates (with copies varying from 7 to 17) along with two single copy isolates formed Cluster 3.
