A CPE was produced at North Carolina State University (NCSU) from the isolate referenced in Litaker et al. (2002), originally obtained from the Pamlico River in North Carolina in May 1991.
(GTG 5 and ITS-PCR analysis revealed that K. pneumoniae and K. oxytoca isolates, reference and type strains formed distinct cluster groups, and tentative subclusters could be established.
Red isolates: local blood isolates; Blue isolates: local stool isolates; Black isolates: reference GenBank isolates.
Only isolates referenced as PVYN-W were amplified and gave the expected PCR product of 4114 nt, whereas no band was obtained from PVYN, PVYNTN or PVYO isolates.
Preference was given to results from studies which included U.S. based isolates, referenced CLSI methods, and recent studies.
A total of 30 NMRI mice, 5 isolates (the four different clinical isolates and a reference isolate (A. fumigatus NCPF2109)), 3 inocula per isolate, and 2 mice per inoculum was used.

One of the S. aureus isolates was the reference isolate M60 kindly provided by Dr. A. J. Guidry (Immunology and Disease Resistance Laboratory USDA, Beltsville, USA).
This assumption is supported by the fact that each identified cluster, with the exception of the animal isolates, includes one reference isolate and no distant outgroups occurred.
Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) were determined for each isolate using reference dilution methods (NCCLS).
