In Cardinal O'Connor's style, Cardinal Bernard Law of Boston was utterly direct with this message -- no matter how uncomfortable he might be making a group of political leaders, virtually none of whom could qualify as "unambiguously pro-life" by the standards spelled out in the Boston prelate's homily.
Certainly there are poems that are utterly direct, like the rending details in "Helen" of his wife's illness: The next night her cough was worse, with a harsher texture, the spasms came more rapidly, and they'd end with a deep, complicated emptying, like the whining flattening of a bagpipe.
