My prediction is that "choice" and its twin sister, "diversity", will finally fade into the distance.
The reality is that choice has always existed for the rich few and is something to which everyone aspired.
The thesis of "Nudge," which Cass R. Sunstein and I wrote in 2008, is that "choice architects" can often help people achieve their goals simply by making the necessary steps easier.
And that the experience of the generation since "women's lib" demonstrates is that choice is not an answer to the question of how life should be lived, only a condition for answering that question freely.
A broader point this illustrates is that choice is likely to produce more of what parents want, and those skills may or may not be the ones along the dimensions of what policymakers prefer.
An underlying assumption is that choice is driven by trading between treatment attributes (for example, side effects and efficacy).
