In your otherwise excellent analysis of Sharper Image's litigation with Consumers Union over the effectiveness of the Ionic Breeze air cleaner, "A Mighty Wind" (July 5, p. 62), two points need clarifying.
Sharper Image, whose catalog I once brought to my Dad when I was twelve or so and pointed to a suit of armor and told him it was $45 and he told me that was the cost for shipping and that the armor was $5,500 or something, is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy citing slow sales and litigation over its Ionic Breeze air purifiers.
We continue to emphatically disagree with Consumer Union's methods in evaluating the Ionic Breeze".
CR tested five units (including the top-selling Ionic Breeze from The Sharper Image) and confirmed results reported in October 2003 rating most of the air cleaners "poor" at removing dust and tobacco smoke from the indoor environment.
