The tuber-specific changes in LCY-e gene expression were accompanied by tuber-specific changes in carotenoid composition: first, total carotenoid levels increased significantly, albeit to variable extents; second, this increase involved, as expected, mostly carotenoids of the β-β branch; third, β-carotene showed the highest relative increases (up to 14-fold) among all carotenoid compounds.
