For the Neuroticism analysis, we included all Neuroticism items from the NEO, the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) and Eysenck (EPQ, EPI, ABV) inventories, the Harm Avoidance (HA) items from the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), and the Negative Emotionality (NEM) items (excluding the aggression items) from the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire (MPQ).
TCI-HA = Temperament and Character Inventory - Harm-avoidance.
Some studies have used semi-structured [ 22] or comprehensive interviews (i.e. Suicide Attempt Self-Injury Interview [ 23]; Deliberate Self-Harm Interview Schedule [ 24]; Self-Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors Interview [ 25]) while others have developed self-report scales (i.e. Self-Harm Inventory [ 4]; Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory [ 26]).
f) The 16 item Deliberate Self Harm inventory [ 55] for those who respond with a 1 or 2 for YSR item 18 or 91 (relating to self-harm or suicide).
The DSH measures were Self-Injury Questionnaire Treatment Related (SIQTR), Self-Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors Interview (SITBI), Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory (DSHI), Inventory of Statements About Self-Injury (ISAS), Self-Harm Information Form (SHIF) and Self-Harm Inventory (SHI).
Suicide and self-harm are assessed with the Suicide and Self-Harm Inventory (SSHI) [ 3].
Six DSH tests (see Table 1) were therefore selected for the study, namely: Self-Injury Questionnaire Treatment Related (SIQTR) [ 34], Self-Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors Interview (SITBI) [ 26], Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory (DSHI) [ 16], Inventory of Statements About Self-Injury (ISAS) [ 6], Self-Harm Information Form (SHIF) [ 35], and Self-Harm Inventory (SHI) [ 21].
Using a 9-item self-harm inventory 45.1% of girls and 37.9% of boys reported at least one episode of self-harm during the past 6 months.
All participants completed two self-report measures [Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-Revised (PDQ-R); Self-Harm Inventory (SHI)] and a semi-structured interview [Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines (DIB)] for the assessment of borderline personality disorder.
The Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory [ 28, 29] specifically excludes measures of self-poisoning.
A modified version of the Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory (DSHI) [ 51] was utilized to measure SIB.
