By one year of age (52 weeks), all mice developed microinvasive adenocarcinoma lesions, consisting of lesions apparently in transition to true invasion as in Figures 4, 6 7 and those that are frankly invasive (Figure 4C).
These xenograft lines were categorized according to whether they were highly, moderately, minimally, or non invasive (Figure S2).
In contrast to the EMT/mesenchymal markers, many genes downstream of AKT and related cancer-relevant pathways (PI3-Kinase, PTEN, IGF1R, mTOR and S6 Kinase) are induced when PC-3 and PC-3M cells become invasive (Figure S4a c).
Interestingly, when we compared the adhesion and invasion levels of the E. coli strains belonging to this subgroup, we observed that strains LF82 and UTI89 adhered at a similar level and that like LF82, APEC_01 and UTI89 were highly invasive (Figure 7B and C).

Despite this, a synthetic peptide containing the alternate bridge connectivity generated by the Vederas group [17] was not anti-invasive (Figure 9C), nor did it prevent cell adhesion (Figure 9D).
If invasive species have broader and/or greater physiological tolerances than natives occupying the same thermal habitat, it is likely that increased temperatures associated with climate change will exceed native species' tolerance limits before those of invasives (Figure 1).
Notably though in approximately 20% of 1 3 month old kita-GFP-RAS fish (n = 252), tumors progress to an invasive phenotype (figure 2c, figure s1e, o).
Immunohistochemical analysis confirmed that expression of cathepsins D, B and Z was almost exclusively localised in the stroma of invasive tumors (Figure 2B, E and S2A, B) but was absent from PIN stroma (Figure S2C, arrowheads).
Pathway analysis by using our invasion signature genes linked networks that connect hypoxia to invasive potential (Figure 5), which provides additional strength to the suggestion that hypoxia may be a significant driver of phenotype switching in melanoma [19] and contributes to melanoma progression [38].
The pT stages of 181 cases were non-invasive (Ta, Figure 1A) or early invasive (T1), and the other 159 cases were advanced stages (T2 ~ T4).
VILIP-1 was not expressed in approximately 25% invasive SCCs (Figure 4F).
