A recent field tsunami survey reported that the maximum inundation height exceeded 40 m along the Sanriku coast (The 2011 Tohoku Earthquake Tsunami Joint Survey Group, 2011).
To obtain the inundation height profiles, discrete cells containing zero elevation were set up along the coastline and peak values were extracted within individual cells.
The prediction of tsunami heights is fairly consistent with observed heights, suggesting that the prediction of inundation height at the coast may be made with considerable precision.
Then, based on definite descriptions on tsunami heights, such as inundation up to the floorboards at a particular place, site elevations were measured through leveling surveys in field investigations; thus, the inundation height was re-affirmed for each description.
