Fire prevention is only an issue for Spanish interviewees, where a clear consensus exists amongst the stakeholders regarding the synergy between forest biomass harvesting and fire prevention.
Friends and acquaintances referred by the original interviewees where different beliefs and/or behavior/practice were noticed were also purposively included to help capture maximum diversity of opinion.
Where we provide brief illustrative quotations from interviews, we identify the role and ID number of the interviewee, and where interviewees were interviewed more than once, we indicate whether it was interview 1, 2 or 3 (see online supplementary appendix for longer versions of quotations).

Basic demographic data was collected about the interviewees, including where they lived, their age and ethnicity, educational qualifications, previous criminal history and whether they worked.
Written consent was obtained from all interviewees or, where one could not sign, a thumbprint was taken or a nominated close relative signed on their behalf.
The project will make use of the aforementioned possibility of comparison of groups, where interviewees in Norway and interviewees in Germany are going to comprise the two main groups.
