Detection of abstract dependencies at arbitrary variable distances (crucially beyond one intervening element, already shown in [ 4, 7]) has never been demonstrated before in a non-human animal (though see [ 8] for initial hints).
In B. subtilis, the gene encoding σK contains a 48 kb insertion sequence called the skin (sigma K intervening) element that must first be excised from the mother-cell chromosome by the recombinase SpoIVCA [ 79, 80].
