Even in a supportive environment where accommodations like interpreters are provided, being a deaf researcher among mostly hearing colleagues can be isolating, as Bridges student Sara Blick has experienced.
Non-Kurdish minorities, mostly Arabs but also Syriacs, Turkmen and Assyrians, are also given priority on the speaking list; at meetings I witnessed, interpreters were provided.
The constitutional guarantees of access to the courts, due process, equal protection and the right to counsel also require that interpreters be provided.
