Senator Bennett added that trying to devise Internet defenses without candid information from private industry would be like "trying to run a battle, when 85percentt of the battlefield is blind to you".
"After the Iranian attacks, we were looking at these ideas pretty hard," said a recently departed senior official in the Obama national security team, who like other officials declined to be identified because of the sensitivities of the government's discussions about building Internet defenses.

Strengthening defenses against Internet criminals would also strengthen defenses against any military-directed cyberattacks, the United States maintains.
An appropriate screen name is the first defense against Internet predators.
