Young black men internalize images, promoted by society, of being misogynists and consumers.
Each day I was passively internalizing images of the Black death.
But Asian Americans also have internalized the image.
Whether they are influenced by the trickle-down effects of feminism, which has taught girls to be assertive in all areas of life, or have internalized the images of sexually powerful women in popular culture, American girls are more daring than ever.
People internalize the images and narratives from media culture and they create, recreate or challenge our ideas, beliefs and values.
As they internalize these images subconsciously and try to look like them, sexual power and titillation gets confused with real, personal power.
"Young people internalize the images in their minds... when they look in the mirror, they are not able to understand that they look right," she says.
Once self-concept and body image are internalized they tend to remain stable, underlining the importance of efforts in childhood to protect them [ 7- 9, 11].
That these ideas and images were internalized by ordinary Americans is illustrated by a letter Phil Aquila wrote to his sister in October 1944.
