In the simulations where the strength of selection was proportional to the effect size, the QTLST detected selection less often in lower variance QTL samples for s < 10−6 and less often for intermediate variance samples for s ≥ 10−6.
An attempt was made to obtain the direction of the wave number vector using minimum variance analysis, but the ratio of the intermediate to minimum variance was not large enough to obtain the minimum variance direction with a good accuracy.

In addition, genera with intermediate levels of variance in mean number have the highest proportions of weeds, whereas genera with the highest variances have the highest proportions of noxious species (Figs. 1 and 2).
Figure 3 presents the result of minimum variance analysis (Sonnerup and Cahill 1967) for the time interval from 11 00 to 23:10 UT on 17 March with 1-min averagedatata (14:10–16:50 UT data being excluded), where B1, B2 and B3 denote the magnetic field components in the maximum, intermediate and minimum variance directions, respectively.
In the present investigation, we use the technique developed by McPherron et al. (1972) in which the diagonalization of the real part of the power spectral density matrix gives the three eigenvectors (ζ 1,ζ 2,ζ 3) and corresponding eigenvalues (λ 1,λ 2,λ 3) for maximum, intermediate, and minimum variance directions, respectively.
Cohen [44] considered effect sizes accounting for 9% of the variance to be intermediate and 25% of the variance to be large.
The seasonal variation in contribution can be attributed into differences in soil wetness conditions; lower contribution was found at intermediate wetness for spatial variances of temporal mean and temporal anomalies.
Work on Drosophila has indicated that additive genetic variance in fecundity follows a U-shaped curve, with lowest variance at intermediate ages (Tatar et al. 1996), while mortality shows the opposite pattern (Promislow et al. 1996).
In contrast to the evolution of contributions at the two schema layers (Section 5.2.2), the evolution of the collaboration structures at these intermediate layers shows broader variance.
