Three spatio-temporal process domains were analysed: the spot- and plot-processes at the finest scale, the hillslope, micro- and sub-catchment processes at the intermediate scale and catchment scale and main channel network processes at the broadest scale.
This is however, but one example of work on structured catalysts and reactors that is expected to have an impact on the intermediate scale and fine chemicals manufacturing in the near future.
Traditionally the intermediate scale and fine chemicals industries have relied on stirred tank reactors, operated continuously or more commonly batchwise, as the work horse of their manufacturing plant to the almost total exclusion of any other type of liquid reactor.
At the intermediate scale, and for the conditions tested, modest differences in the simulations suggested that intra-NAPL diffusion effects would be negligible compared to those associated with mixture composition uncertainty, dissolution rate processes related to NAPL-induced permeability effects and hydrodynamic issues associated with flow field heterogeneity.
It uses a modified TreePM algorithm: an FFT based particle-mesh on the large scales, a tree algorithm on intermediate scales and particle-particle on the smallest scales.
The fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background, as measured by COBE (on large scales), WMAP (on intermediate scales), and Planck (on small scales), are all consistent with not only arising from a scale-invariant set of quantum fluctuations, but of being so low in magnitude that they could not possibly have arisen from an arbitrarily hot, dense state.
The diverse state-of-the-art papers collected here show how insight can come from many fields including statistical physics, structural geology and rock mechanics at large scales; elasticity, friction and nonlinear continuum mechanics at intermediate scales; and fracture mechanics, granular mechanics and surface physics at small scales.
It is likely that trends over short and intermediate scales, and including some of the better known results such as from the North Sea, are similar to trends attributed to variation with depth - they actually represent coincident environmental gradients.
Our results suggest that regional differences in diversity components at coarse scales (γ-diversity, at ≫1 km2, Figure 1B translate into similar differences at intermediate scales and even at very short distances between plots (β-diversity, at <50 m apart, Figure 3A,D) but tend to disappear or even reverse at the finest scales (α-diversity, at 0.25 450 m2, Figure 4).
The underlying physical descriptions can also vary with scale: first, the quantum mechanical treatment of degrees of freedom at (sub- atomic sub- atomicond, the clascales represecondion of discretheatoms, moleclassicalgrepresentationules at intermediate scales, and third, the mesofcopic or continuum treatment of entire molecular systems.
Large-scale patterns evident from satellite images of aeolian landforms on Earth and other planets; those of intermediate scale in marine and terrestrial sand ripples and sediment profiles; and small-scale patterns such as lamellae in the bones of vertebrates and annuli in fish scales are each represented by layers of different thicknesses and lengths.
