Such data sets are of particular use for extracting soil information in areas of intermediate climate where soils are rarely exposed.
In the intermediate climate, P. argemone germinated at 15/5 °C and the other three taxa at 20/10 °C during autumn, while spring germination was limited to 5/5 and 15/5 °C for P. argemone, P. rhoeas and P. dubium ssp.

We quantify the tension between the objectives to reduce the rate of surface temperature warming and sea-level rise using an intermediate complexity climate model (UVic; refs 21, 22).

This pattern can be explained by a summer start at intermediate and warm climates including a period warm and long enough to lower the degree of dormancy and to lead to germination during autumn, and that the autumn start in the cold climate (5 °C) was well suited for germination for fresh seeds of P. argemone (Fig. 1).
This is not to say that the human scales are unimportant, but rather focusing on global- and regional-scale forcing and response will provide an intermediate step, where climate models can be used to inform downscaling studies to better understand ASM climate change on human scales (Fowler et al. 2007).
