Walter Pforzheimer, who helped draft the legislation that created the C.I.A. and later built what is probably the world's greatest collection of intelligence literature in English, revered two institutions above all others -- the Central Intelligence Agency and the libraries of Yale University.
Pforzheimer retired in 1974 and busied himself for the next 30 years lecturing on intelligence literature, occasionally testifying before Congress on the history of the legislation that created the C.I.A. and trying to catalog the 20,000 books he left in his will to Yale.
