The IQ score was measured using the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence, depressive symptoms with the Beck Depression Inventory and anxiety symptoms with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory.
The 8-year exam included an assessment of maternal intelligence and depression using the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test (Kaufman and Kaufman 1990) and the Beck Depression Inventory (Beck et al. 1996), respectively, and family and home characteristics using the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (HOME) (Caldwell and Bradley 1984).
The corrected path length did not correlate with severity of dementia, premorbid intelligence or depression scores for any of the experimental groups (partial correlation, corrected for age, gender and years of education: MMSE: AD r = −0.45; p = 0.10; OC r = 0.38; p = 0.12); NLV: AD r = −0.02; p = 0.93; OC r = −0.10; p = 0.69; GDS: AD r = −0.48; p = 0.08; OC r = 0.35; p = 0.16).
We thoroughly assessed potential confounders, adjusting for several socioeconomic status indicators, as well as maternal intelligence and depression symptoms, and water lead concentrations.
The measurement of most psychological attributes, such as intelligence, anxiety and depression, does not rely on homomorphic mappings of the sort espoused by the Representational Theory of Measurement (Wilson 2013 37666).
