With our model we calculated from the growth curves and ages at which species reached sexual maturity energy intake functions and energy partitioning for five ectothermic and seven endothermic vertebrate species.
Ectothermic and endothermic vertebrates differ not only in their source of body temperature (environment vs. metabolism), but also in growth patterns, in timing of sexual maturation within life, and energy intake functions.
Other intake functions can also be used if the model is solved numerically [see Supplemental Material (doi 10.1289/ehp.0900648.S1)].
If required, the conceptual framework developed here could also be set up with age-dependent physiologic parameters and more general intake functions.
