A number of cases brought before the supreme court in 1901, known as the insular cases, testing the relationship of Puerto Rico and Hawaiii and the Philippines) and the U.S., as well as the status of Puerto Ricans, resulted in decisions that affirmed that Puerto Rico was Foreign in a Domestic Sense!
This view was largely adopted by the Supreme Court of the United States beginning in 1901 in the so-called "Insular Cases".
In the present data set, the striatum was not consistently damaged in the insular cases with the greatest behavioural effects, and we consider it unlikely that striatal damage underlies the lack of risk adjustment in the insular group.
The first was the insular character of the island.
Mutism has been frequently observed in cases of insular pathology: Transient mutism is found in cases of left inferior motor cortex damage extending to the insula [ 57, 58], whereas lasting mutism appears to be associated with bilateral lesions of the frontal operculum and anterior insula [ 59- 61].
In contrast, the distributions of risk adjustment scores show clear separation of the insular cortex cases from each of the other three groups, with 12/13 cases scoring below the lower bound for the 95% confidence interval (CI) for the mean of the healthy control group (Supplementary Fig. 2B).
In all cases of poorly differentiated and anaplastic (insular) carcinomas, the PTC component when present was minor (<10% of the volume of the tumor).
Intriguingly, however, a recent structural MRI study of brain morphology in familial cases of Tourette syndrome reported reduced cortical thickness of the frontal motor, cingulate, and insular cortices, with the degree of cortical thinning correlated with tic severity.
The distributions of individual data-points for betting behaviour showed clear separation of the vmPFC and insular cortex cases from the healthy controls and lesion controls (Supplementary Fig. 2A).
There were 184 cases of medullary carcinoma and 57 cases of anaplastic/insular carcinoma.
