After washing with PBS the TUNEL assay was performed (APOPTOSIS-I.S.-kit from YLEM, Rome, Italy) according to the manufacturers instructions; however, the streptavidin-peroxidase system was replaced by streptavidin-FITC (Dako) (dilution 1 15).
Tissue sections were permeabilised using a Paraffin Pre-treatment Reagent Kit (Vysis, Surrey, UK) according to the manufacturers' instructions; however, the protease solution digestion was extended to 25 min.
